The World Athletics Championship is currently underway in Hungary from August 19 to 27, marking the most significant international sports event in the country's history, Euronews reports.
The organizing committee takes pride in Budapest becoming the global sports focus during this week.
"With over 2,100 athletes representing 200 countries worldwide. Additionally, more than 50,000 spectators from 103 countries are expected to cheer on the athletes, and over a billion viewers are anticipated to tune in. These statistics truly reflect the immense scale of this sporting occasion," stated Adam Schmidt, Secretary of State for Sports.
The cost of hosting the World Championship is substantial, with the government allocating €180mn for the organization, anticipating a worthwhile investment. The stadium's price tag is approximately €650mn.
"The inaugural event of the World Championship will commence slightly before 9 AM on Saturday, launching from Heroes' Square. Soon after, the first medals will be conferred for the women's 20 km walk," reports Adam Madyar, Euronews correspondent in Budapest.
