Since the beginning of 2023, Haiti has witnessed a toll of at least 2,439 lives lost and 902 people wounded, a result of the grip of power held by gangs that now rule the nation, Euronews has reported.
Among these casualties, over 350 deaths stem from actions taken by local residents and self-defense groups.
Additionally, approximately 200,000 Haitian inhabitants have been compelled to abandon their homes, and gangs have set fire to thousands of residences.
António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, has issued a plea to the global community to dispatch special forces and military support units to Haiti, aiming to confront the gang formations and restore peace in the country.
Furthermore, Guterres pointed out in his communication that the current state of affairs in Haiti does not provide the conducive environment required for UN peacekeeping initiatives to operate within the country.
