Local media report the discovery of a new mass burial in the city of Shusha in Azerbaijan's Karabakh region, AA has reported.
The burial containing bodies of reportedly 17 Azerbaijani citizens, killed during the First Karabakh War, was found as a result of excavations conducted from August 1 to 15 in the territory of the Shusha prison.
Currently, authorized institutions' personnel, including the State Commission for Prisoners of War, Hostages, and Missing Persons, are present at the mass burial site.
Representative of the State Commission, Zaur Ismailov, noted that nails were found in the remains of six bodies. This suggests that prisoners were tortured and forced to swallow nails, he said.
According to him, there are also traces of gunshot wounds and puncture-cutting objects. As per a statement from the military prosecutor's representative Emil Tagiyev, over the past period, the remains of more than 480 individuals have been discovered in Azerbaijan's liberated territories.
"31 of them were found in the Shusha prison area. Presumably, these remains belong to Azerbaijanis who were taken captive and held here as hostages during the First Karabakh War," Tagiyev said.
Previously, a mass burial was discovered on the territory of the Shusha prison in June of this year.
To this day, mass burials have been found in the Agdam, Shusha, Khojavend, Khojaly, Fizuli, and Kalbajar districts of Azerbaijan's liberated territories.
