The People's Deputies Council in Uzbekistan should become the voice of the people, stated President Shavkat Mirziyoyev during a meeting in Bukhara on August 11.
Each mayor of the region must draw conclusions based on the President's visits to the Tashkent, Fergana, and Bukhara regions, where dozens of leaders were dismissed, he said.
"If you do not draw conclusions, you do not meet the requirements of today. Only and only the council, the council, the council. From the perspective of laws, requirements, and the motto of the 'New Uzbekistan,' give me suggestions about those who do not work on the ground. They must be dismissed. The council's voice must become the loud voice of the people, the council must live with people's issues. The council's decisions must be the law. Why? Because the demands of the people are qualitatively growing in our society," said the President.
According to Gazeta.uz, the president emphasized that the heads of executive bodies must collaborate with the councils in the interests of the people. In Uzbekistan, under the old Constitution, mayors simultaneously held positions as the chairpersons of the People's Deputies Councils. According to the law on the revised Constitution, starting from 2024, it is planned to prohibit regional mayors and the Tashkent mayor from simultaneously holding the position of council chairperson.
However, the country's Basic Law still does not prohibit mayors from being elected as deputies and senators. The long-debated possibility of electing mayors was not included in the Constitution draft during the referendum.
