A marked increase in measles cases has been observed in Kazakhstan during July, with the region of Almaty being the most significantly affected.
The country has reported 2,694 cases of measles between January 1 and July 27, a stark contrast to the mere 10 cases recorded in 2022.
The region of Almaty alone accounts for over 40% of the total measles cases, while other regions have also reported high levels of disease activity.
Health officials strongly encourage the public to ensure that they are up to date with their measles vaccinations to prevent further transmission.
Despite an estimated measles vaccination coverage of 97% in the year 2021, over 80% of cases in this current outbreak have been found to be unvaccinated.
Measles is a highly contagious disease that can spread through respiratory droplets and contaminated surfaces. Symptoms may appear up to 21 days after exposure, typically including fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a distinctive rash. Serious complications, such as pneumonia, can occur, particularly in young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.
Earlier, Daryo reported that 164 citizens of Uzbekistan had been found to have measles since the advent of 2023.
