The first half of 2023 has proven to be a remarkable period for tourism in Uzbekistan, with the nation welcoming a substantial influx of visitors. On August 6, Statistics Agency reported that a total of 3.1 mn people visited Uzbekistan for tourism purposes during this timeframe, marking an impressive surge of over 60% compared to the previous year.
A significant portion of these tourists hail from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), with foreign citizens from neighbouring countries showing keen interest in exploring Uzbekistan's cultural and historical attractions. The Statistics Agency's data reveals that four key states contribute significantly to the total number of tourists, collectively accounting for approximately 92% of the overall influx. These states are as follows:
- Tajikistan: 958.5 thousand visitors
- Kyrgyzstan: 786.4 thousand visitors
- Kazakhstan: 764.4 thousand visitors
- Russia: 345 thousand visitors
Notably, Kyrgyzstan experienced a notable upsurge in tourist trips during the months of May and June, positioning itself in second place in terms of tourist arrivals. This achievement is particularly remarkable considering its previous lag behind Kazakhstan by more than 70 thousand trips. Furthermore, the demand for travel among Russian citizens intensified significantly, with their numbers over two months amounting to nearly two-thirds of the total figure for the preceding four months.
Amidst the international landscape, Turkey emerged as the leader in terms of the number of visitors from distant countries, with a count of 48.3 thousand people. This achievement secured Turkey the fifth position in the overall ranking of countries contributing to Uzbekistan's tourism industry. Turkmenistan followed closely with 29.5 thousand tourists, with more than half of these arrivals occurring within the last two months.
The top 10 list of contributing nations includes:
- India: 16.7 thousand visitors
- South Korea: 15.9 thousand visitors
- China: 13.3 thousand visitors
- Germany: 11.7 thousand visitors
A notable trend is the sharp increase in the number of visitors from all these countries during the months of May and June. This surge highlights the growing appeal of Uzbekistan's cultural and natural treasures to a diverse range of international travellers.
