Uzbekistan imported 2,282 parrots from tropical countries during the first half of 2023.
Reportedly, these birds are valued at $34,400, with an average cost of $15 per parrot.
Most parrots, totaling 1,180, were sourced from the Philippines, with 498 coming from Thailand.
The Netherlands, Spain, and Malaysia have also imported these birds with 262, 172, and 170 parrots, respectively.
Media reports indicate that budgerigars and cockatiels are the most commonly kept parrot species as pets in Uzbekistan. These avian species are favored for their small size, vibrant plumage, and ability to mimic human speech. In addition, various parrot species, such as macaws and African grey parrots, can be found in zoos throughout the country, with the Tashkent Zoo housing diverse bird life.
While it is permissible to keep parrots as pets within the country, acquiring them from reliable sources and considering their well-being is imperative. It is also crucial to refrain from purchasing wild-caught birds as this contributes to the illegal trafficking of wildlife.
