In a significant legal development, the criminal court of Termez in Uzbekistan concluded a trial against the former mayor of the city, Isroil Khudaiberdiev, and 17 other individuals. The court found Khudaiberdiev guilty of multiple offences, including theft, abuse of power, forgery, bribery, violation of land procedures, and money laundering, all of which were committed on a large scale, the press service of the Supreme Court of Uzbekistan reported on July 27.
As a result of the trial, Isroil Khudaiberdiev was sentenced to 11 years in a penal colony and was also deprived of the right to hold responsible and materially responsible positions in state organisations for 2.5 years. The severity of the sentence reflects the gravity of the crimes he was found guilty of committing during his tenure as the khokim (mayor) of Termez from February 2017 to September 2022 in the trial commenced in May and concluded on July 27.
The remaining 17 individuals who were involved in the case received varied sentences, including fines, corrective labour, and imprisonment, ranging from 1 year 9 months 15 days to 9 years. Some of these individuals held high-ranking positions in the city's administration, such as former first deputy mayor, deputy mayor for construction, and city architect.
The charges against the defendants include serious financial crimes, abuse of power, and corruption-related offences, which have implications for public trust and governance. The fact that multiple individuals from the city administration were involved in these crimes raises concerns about the level of corruption and misconduct within the local government.
