Renowned animation director Hayao Miyazaki's latest film, "How Do You Live," was released in Japanese cinemas on Friday, marking what is believed to be his final feature film, BBC reports.
Miyazaki, along with his animation studio Studio Ghibli, has had an immense impact on the film industry, both in Japan and worldwide. Films like "Princess Mononoke," "Spirited Away," and "Howl's Moving Castle" have become some of Japan's highest-grossing films and have inspired countless filmmakers.
"How Do You Live" takes its title from a novel by Genzaburo Yoshino but tells an original story penned by Miyazaki. Set during World War Two in Japan, the film follows a young boy named Mahito, whose mother dies in a fire. After his father marries his late wife's sister and moves to her home, Mahito becomes resentful. He discovers a mysterious tower in the backyard of the house and a talking grey heron who claims his mother is alive and waiting to be rescued. This leads Mahito on a quest into a magical alternate world filled with new friends and enemies.
Miyazaki's signature style is prevalent in the film, featuring visually stunning animations, charming, yet sometimes eerie creatures, and fantastical elements. Thematically, "How Do You Live" explores themes of coming-of-age and learning to live for others, echoing Miyazaki's own biography and his close bond with his mother.
Interestingly, there has been a deliberate lack of promotional push for the film. Studio Ghibli's president and producer, Toshio Suzuki, intentionally limited the release of information to generate audience interest. While early screenings in Tokyo's entertainment district showed strong attendance, the true success will be determined by box office numbers and word-of-mouth buzz in the coming weeks.
As Miyazaki has threatened retirement before, "How Do You Live" is presumed to be his final feature film. The future of Studio Ghibli remains uncertain, as the studio has attempted to pass the baton to the next generation with mixed success. However, Ghibli has plans for its next film and has expanded into ventures like Ghibli Park, a unique theme park in Nagoya, Japan.
Regardless of Studio Ghibli's future, Hayao Miyazaki's legacy is secure. His contributions have helped establish animated films as Japan's beloved form of entertainment, and he has inspired a new generation of filmmakers.
