Kyrgyzstan has enacted a ban on the advertising of energy drinks, as per the press service of the Ministry of Economy of the Kyrgyz Republic. Kyrgyzstan's President, Sadyr Zhaparov, approved the amendment to the "Law on Advertising" on July 3, 2023, which imposes a prohibition on the advertising of energy drinks.
The Kyrgyz authorities have justified this decision based on the health risks associated with these beverages. Some energy drinks contain up to 100 mg of caffeine per serving, which is eight times the amount found in an average cup of coffee. Consumption of these drinks can lead to elevated blood sugar levels and spikes in blood pressure, particularly posing a danger to adolescents.
One of the reasons for the ban on energy drink advertising in Kyrgyzstan is the high sugar content. For instance, a single can of energy drink contains the equivalent of 27 teaspoons of sweetener. Regular consumption of such drinks can contribute to serious health conditions, including diabetes.
The bill proposing the ban on energy drinks was introduced by parliament member Ulan Bakasov in the autumn of 2022. It emphasised the need to protect the health of Kyrgyz citizens and reduce the prevalence of illnesses associated with energy drink consumption.
In the final version of the law, the sale of energy drinks itself is not prohibited.
