Two men accused of carrying out a deadly attack on the Shahcheragh Shrine in Shiraz, Iran, in October 2022 were executed on July 8.
The Supreme Court of Iran had rejected an appeal filed on behalf of the two men, Mohammed Ramez Rashidi and Sayed Naeem Hashemi Qatali, as confirmed by the Fars Province Chief Prosecutor.
The attack, which occurred on October 26, 2022, resulted in the deaths of thirteen people, with an additional forty individuals sustaining injuries. The Shahcheragh Shrine, located in the southern city of Shiraz, was targeted during one of its busiest times.
ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack, issuing a statement through its affiliated Amaq news agency. The terrorist group declared that one of its members had targeted groups of "Sunni refusal infidels" within the shrine, using a machine gun and causing the death of numerous individuals.
Coinciding with the attack, clashes erupted across the country on the same day, marking 40 days since the death of Mahsa Amini. Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian woman, died in police custody after being taken to a "re-education center" allegedly due to improper hijab adherence. It remains uncertain if the attack on the shrine was directly linked to the protests.
The death of Mahsa Amini triggered widespread protests throughout the Islamic Republic, reflecting public outrage over her treatment and highlighting broader social and political issues.
