Kaha Imnadze of Georgia appointed Special Representative, Head of United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA), headquartered in Ashgabat, the UN reports.
Imnadze succeeds Natalia Gherman of the Moldova, who was appointed as Executive Director of the Counter-Terrorism Executive Directorate, according to a press release available to Daryo.
The UNRCCA office in Ashgabat, established in 2007, assists the governments of Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan in building capacity for peaceful dispute resolution and conflict prevention through dialogue and attracting international support.
Imnadze brings to the position over 30 years of experience in diplomacy, civil service and business. Previously, he served as Permanent Representative of Georgia to the United Nations from 2013 to 2022.
Observers note that remains a region of instability, with bloody fighting between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, suppressed uprisings in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, and proximity to a tense Afghanistan.
