President Vladimir Putin was presented with a Quran from the sacred city of Mecca during his visit to the Juma Mosque in Derbent. The director of the Derbent Museum-Preserve, Veli Fataliyev, TASS reports.
"Our president was given a Quran from the sacred city of Mecca," said the museum director.
"This is a holy book for Muslims, and it is considered sacred by all others as well. We know that in other countries, they act differently and do not respect the religious sentiments of people. And they say it's not a crime. In our country, it is a crime," Putin emphasized.
During his working trip to Dagestan, Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the Juma Mosque in Derbent. This mosque is the oldest in Russia and one of the oldest in the world. According to written sources, its construction began in 733-734 AD by the Arab military commander Maslama ibn Abd al-Malik. The mosque's inner courtyard is home to three ancient plane trees. In 2012, these millennium-old trees were recognized as natural monuments and are now protected by the state.
In Dagestan, on June 28, one of the two main Islamic holidays, Eid al-Adha (Kurban-Bayram), or the Feast of Sacrifice, is celebrated. This holiday marks the culmination of the Hajj pilgrimage to the sacred sites of Islam in Saudi Arabia.
