A teacher employed at a secondary school near Venice, Italy, was found to have avoided going to work for 20 years by using sick leave and other similar options, media reports.
Cinzio Paolina De Lio, assigned to teach literature and philosophy, only showed up for work four times in the 24 years she was employed. Her actions resulted in her being fired on June 22 after the Italian Supreme Court deemed her "permanently and absolutely unsuitable" for the job.
Even when she did show up, her students went on strike due to her unprofessional behavior during their oral exams, random grading, and failure to bring a textbook. School inspectors described her lessons as "confused", ultimately leading to her dismissal.
This is not an isolated incident, as other workers in Italy have also been accused of similar misconduct, such as Salvatore Scumace, who allegedly falsely claimed to work as a fire safety officer for 15 years, costing the state €538,000.
