Storms have wreaked havoc across Europe causing significant damage and widespread disruption to infrastructure and communities, Euronews reported.
Torrential rain and powerful winds have battered countries like Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, leading to the closure of roads, disruptions in rail traffic, landslides, and destruction of property.
In Germany, the summer storms have resulted in the closure of several important transportation routes. The Hamburg-Berlin rail line and a major north-south line between Kassel and Goettingen have been forced to shut down due to storm damage. This closure has severely impacted both passenger and freight transportation, leading to inconvenience and delays for travelers and businesses alike.
Switzerland has also experienced the wrath of the storms. Thunderstorms on June 22, prompted numerous calls to the fire department as wind speeds reached up to 135 km/h. The high winds uprooted trees, damaged roofs, and caused the destruction of street furniture. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, but the aftermath of the storms has left communities grappling with the cleanup and recovery efforts.
Austria has faced its share of challenges as well. The country witnessed several landslides that damaged homes, posing a threat to residents. The state of Carinthia experienced hailstones measuring up to 8 centimeters in diameter, leading to devastating losses in agricultural crops. Furthermore, the storms resulted in flooded streets and uprooted trees, exacerbating the situation and adding to the difficulties faced by affected areas.
Videos circulating on social media platforms captured the intensity of the storms, with violent squalls and flooded streets becoming a common sight. In one striking example, the forecourt and road in front of the Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe ICE train station were submerged underwater, highlighting the scale of the damage caused by the heavy rainfall.
Efforts are underway to restore the transportation infrastructure and ensure the safety of residents. However, the road to recovery is expected to be long and challenging, as the extent of the damage becomes clear and communities grapple with the aftermath.
