On the day of his initial court hearing regarding the "extremism" charges, Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny made an announcement that he was launching an "anti-war and anti-Putin" campaign. Navalny shared this news on his official website.
Navalny says that his supporters are planning to carry out a "long, challenging, but crucial campaign" aimed at turning public opinion against the war and everything associated with it. The opposition hopes to reach a wide audience, considering the significant impact the war has had on many people's lives.
Navalny stated that approximately every fifth person has lost relatives or friends in this conflict, and unfortunately, these numbers will continue to rise, thereby influencing public sentiment. Additionally, there are numerous wounded and disabled individuals who have returned home, along with hundreds of thousands of mobilized individuals who have witnessed the consequences firsthand.
Navalny emphasized that there is much work to be done and expressed his intention to hire "volunteer propagandists" who are willing to undertake the demanding tasks involved.
It is important to note that Alexei Navalny could face a maximum prison sentence of 30 years if found guilty of the extremism charges. During a hearing on April 26, the Basmanny court granted Navalny 10 days to familiarize himself with the materials related to the criminal case. The court proceedings were closed to the public and the press, as the investigation was kept confidential. Navalny and his lawyer revealed that the criminal case consists of 196 items.
Since 2021, Alexei Navalny has been serving his sentence in correctional colony No. 6 located in the Vladimir region. In March 2022, he was convicted of fraud and contempt of court, resulting in an additional nine-year sentence in a high-security penal colony.
In October 2022, Navalny announced that a new criminal case had been initiated against him, accusing him of promoting terrorism and extremism, financing extremist activities, and rehabilitating Nazism.
