The state-owned SNCFT rail company reports that a passenger train derailed and overturned in eastern Tunisia, resulting in two fatalities and 34 injuries. The incident occurred shortly after midnight near Msaken, a town located about 150 kilometers from the capital, as the train was traveling from Tunis to Gabes, Al-Arabiya reports.
The SNCFT confirmed that the driver and a passenger lost their lives, while 34 other passengers sustained injuries. An investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances and causes of the accident, as well as to identify those responsible.
This incident follows a train collision 15 months ago in the southern part of the capital, which caused injuries to approximately 100 individuals. In December 2016, another accident in the same area involving a train and a public bus resulted in five fatalities and over 50 injuries.
The chief executive of SNCF, the rail company at the time, was dismissed due to the faulty infrastructure that was blamed for the collision.
