Hunter Biden, the son of US President Joe Biden, has agreed to plead guilty to the US Prosecutor's Office and has reached a deal with law enforcement agencies, Daily Mail reports.
In a court filing, the 53-year-old Hunter Biden admitted to evading over $100,000 in taxes for the years 2017 and 2018, during which he earned more than $1.5mn annually.
The court document also reveals that the Department of Justice will file charges against Hunter Biden but will not prosecute him for the purchase of a light firearm in 2018 when he was using drugs. As part of the plea agreement, Biden must remain drug-free for two years and agree to never possess a firearm again.
The plea agreement between Hunter Biden and Delaware prosecutors is subject to approval by a federal judge. Under this agreement, Biden will not face imprisonment, and the charges against him related to taxes and firearms will be dropped. Such agreements are common in the US for non-violent crimes involving drugs.
US President Joe Biden expressed his pride in his son's plea agreement with law enforcement, stating, "I'm very proud of my son," when asked about Hunter's guilty plea for tax evasion.
Former US President Donald Trump and his allies have long accused Hunter Biden of wrongdoing related to his activities in Ukraine and China. Republicans have claimed that President Joe Biden was aware of these actions.
In 2020, Hunter Biden acknowledged that federal prosecutors were investigating his tax returns. At that time, Joe Biden assured that the Department of Justice would conduct any investigations into his family members independently.
