In a significant step towards enhancing English language education in secondary schools, a group of 26 Peace Corps volunteer trainees arrived in the Kyrgyz Republic.
The volunteers, representing the 29th cohort to serve in the country since 1993, are set to support local teachers and communities in six regions: Chui, Naryn, Issyk-Kul, Talas, Osh, and Jalal-Abad 24kg reports.
Under the guidance of the Kyrgyz government and based on a 1992 agreement with the United States, these Peace Corps trainees will collaborate with local educators to strengthen their proficiency in teaching English by developing new skills and methodologies. Working hand-in-hand with teachers, the volunteers will contribute to the establishment or expansion of English teaching resources, as well as the development of innovative curricula and teaching materials.
For the next 11 weeks, the trainees will undergo comprehensive pre-service training that includes various essential subjects. The training includes Kyrgyz language classes, focused sessions on Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), co-teaching opportunities with local educators, and the cultivation of cross-cultural competence.
The selection process for these Peace Corps trainees was rigorous and aimed to identify individuals who possess exceptional qualifications and a strong commitment to development. Only those who successfully complete the training program will be sworn in as volunteers.
This 29th cohort of Peace Corps trainees holds special significance, as it is the second group to return to the Kyrgyz Republic since all volunteers worldwide were evacuated in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Their arrival signifies a renewed partnership between the United States and the Kyrgyz government, showcasing the commitment of both nations to fostering educational opportunities and cross-cultural exchange.
The Peace Corps brings together skilled, committed Volunteers with welcoming host communities for service opportunities in more than 60 countries. Volunteers live and work side by side with community members on locally prioritized projects, building relationships, exchanging cultures and knowledge, and helping transform lives for generations.
