Turkmenistan has signed a presidential decree on the establishment of an cross-sectoral commission to reduce methane emissions, the "Turkmenistan" newspaper reports.
The document states that this set to be enable the government to monitor the effectiveness of measures to systematically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and, primarily, methane in various sectors of the economy.
Methane is a threat to the climate 80 times more powerful than CO2. Turkmenistan is one of the key energy suppliers in the region. The fuel and energy sector is responsible for most of the methane emissions caused by human activity.
Official Ashgabat is considering joining the Global Methane Pledge, which more than 30 countries have already signed up to, with the aim of reducing methane emissions by 30% by 2030.
Turkmenistan and the US have recently agreed to establish a joint working group to reduce methane emissions and develop an investment plan. Local experts told Daryo that Turkmenistan is working on increasing associated gas recovery and reducing natural gas losses during extraction, transportation, storage and processing.
A separate session of the Turkmen Oil and Gas Investment Roadshow recently held in Dubai (UAE) was dedicated to this issue.
