The International Sea Port in the city of Turkmenbashi has been awarded the EcoPort certificate, the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reports. The certificate was presented to Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov by Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Helga Schmid.
The information says the organisation is implementing a project called "Development of Green Ports and Transport Links in the Caspian Region".
Local experts told Daryo that the project envisages a simplified exchange of information between the ports of Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan and the creation of a digital platform for communication with major European ports.
The new seaport in Turkmenbashi, which has increased access to European countries and markets in the Near and Middle East, became operational in 2018. The $1.5bn project was implemented by Gap Inşaat (Turkey).
The total capacity of the port, excluding oil products, is 17mn tonnes of various cargoes per year. On an area of more than 150 hectares there are 4 terminals: general cargo, containers, bulk cargo and car ferries.
In order to preserve the ecology of the Caspian Sea, bio-treatment facilities have been installed at each of the terminals. In addition, the loading and unloading equipment used here is electrically powered and compliant with Euro-5 standards.
