Sinan Ogan, a former candidate from the Ata alliance who was defeated in the first round of the Turkish presidential election, intends to support President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the second round, Anadolu gazete reports.
Abdulkadir Selvi, a correspondent for the "Hurriyat" newspaper with close ties to the government, revealed that Ogan would endorse the current president in the May 28 runoff election and discuss potential reforms.
Ogan is expected to sign a five-point protocol outlining his support for Erdogan. The clauses include preserving the first four articles of the Constitution, preventing changes to ethnic Turkic provisions, combating terrorism, implementing a phased plan for refugee deportations, and developing economic policies aligned with international markets while increasing flexibility in interest rate policy.
Prior to meeting with Erdogan, Agan reportedly held talks with Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu. On his Twitter page, Agan clarified that his decision was based on principles and the prioritization of the Turkish nation's future, unity, integrity, and stability.
Ogan is scheduled to hold a press conference on May 22, where he will officially announce his stance for the second round. The second round of voting has already commenced for Turkish citizens residing abroad, and observers anticipate high voter turnout compared to the first round held on May 14, where Erdogan received 49.24% of the votes, falling short of the required majority.
