May 17. President Mirziyoyev gave a speech at the 32nd annual meeting of the Board of Directors of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in Samarkand.
The head of Uzbekistan touched on the country's membership in the World Trade Organization at the opening session of the Board’s meeting.
"We will strongly continue the policy of liberalization of goods, services, capital and labour markets. In particular, we have taken huge steps to join the World Trade Organization. I believe that we will achieve significant results in this direction this year," the president assured.
Deputy Prime Minister Jamshid Khojayev commented on the issue of Uzbekistan's membership in the World Trade Organization as well. Khojayev noted that the process would be intense at the session “Yangi O‘zbekiston — yangi investitsiya istiqbollari”(New Uzbekistan - new investment prospects),.
"We have a tight schedule to become a WTO member and we are working hard on it,” the minister said.
Uzbekistan's objective is to double its export of finished products in the next three years, and it views WTO membership as a means of establishing a fair-trade system with 164 countries and securing stable markets.
The Central Asian country has been actively engaged in the process of joining the WTO since 2019 and held its sixth working group meeting on the process in Geneva in March 2023. As a result, negotiations with three states are progressing toward completion, and Uzbekistan is currently in active negotiations with 31 other countries out of 47.
