Nearly 61.1mn eligible voters are anticipated to cast their ballots in the presidential and parliamentary elections on May 14, media reports.
The polling stations opened their doors promptly at 8 a.m. local time (0500GMT) and will continue serving the electorate until 5 p.m. (1400GMT).
Reportedly, 4.9mn individuals will exercise their right to vote for the first time. In addition, mobile ballot boxes have been made available for those who cannot make it to the polling stations, as per the report by the Anadolu agency.
The voters will decide between the incumbent President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and the primary opposition candidate, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the representative of an election coalition that comprises six opposition parties.
Roughly 24 political parties and 151 independent parliamentary candidates participate in the elections.
