During a recent house inspection in the Namangan region, officials discovered a significant quantity of tobacco contraband, media reports.
Specifically, 28,980 packs of foreign-made cigarettes were found without the standard model's required excise stamps and code codes. The estimated value of this illegal shipment is UZS 300mn, and criminal proceedings have been initiated.
Experts in the field have estimated that only 2% of the total volume of the illegal cigarette market was detained in 2022. This market was found to comprise approximately 1.5bn pieces of cigarettes, accounting for 15% of the total number of cigarettes smoked in the country during that period.
