Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Mariusz Blaszczak has pledged to build a strong army within the next two years if the national-conservative Law and Justice party wins the upcoming parliamentary elections, DW reports.
He stated that the Polish army will become the strongest on the ground in Europe. The current conservative-led government in Warsaw is a strong supporter of Ukraine politically and militarily, providing weapons such as tanks and MiG-29 fighter jets.
Poland is also actively arming its own army. Polish President Andrzej Duda has recently announced that he will hand over all of his country's MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine in connection with their purchase of FA-50s from South Korea and F-35s from the United States.
In early April, Duda stated that Poland had already delivered eight MiG-29 fighters to Kyiv and was preparing to deliver six more of the same type. The promise of building a powerful army is part of the election campaign ahead of the parliamentary elections in Poland this fall.
