The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskiy has signed a law requiring the Ukrainian language, history, and constitution exam to be passed in order to receive the country's citizenship.
According to the UNIAN publication of Ukraine, this marks new changes to the existing laws "On Ukrainian citizenship" and "On ensuring the validity of the Ukrainian language as a state language" for the conditions of obtaining Ukrainian citizenship.
Foreigners can reportedly take the exam even after obtaining citizenship, for which a period of two years is given. If a foreigner does not pass these tests during this time, their Ukrainian citizenship will be revoked.
Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) of Ukraine unanimously supported the introduction of Ukrainian citizenship by passing three exams on March 21, 2023.
The updated law includes the introduction of an exam on the basics of the Ukrainian constitution, history, and knowledge of the state language as a condition for citizenship.
