Russian officials have installed antennae on rooftops of embassies in no fewer than 11 European cities in order to collect data and spy on phone calls, the VSQUARE group of journalists reports.
These devices, referred to as "Zenit," have been detected in states like Budapest, Stockholm, and Brussels, and some antennae can even collect discussions between controllers, pilots, police officers, and sailors. The antennas are able to pick up many types of signals, such as radio frequencies and GSM phone calls.
Furthermore, certain Russian diplomatic posts abroad are said to employ one or two special spies designated to receive covert intelligence tasks. The reporters also shared a video of the equipment set up on top of the Russian Embassy in Warsaw, where tiny antennae are set around a big container, potentially intercepting electromagnetic waves such as local intelligence radio transmissions and phone calls.
Experts say that such gadgets are used throughout the world to facilitate spying and for technical intelligence, such as contact with agents.
