A mother of three children killed her two sons and daughter in the Sergeli district of Tashkent on April 3. With a killing intention, the woman pushed her children out of the ninth-floor window and then committed suicide by jumping through the window. The family died at the scene.
The woman had been living in her mother's house for six months. Her husband was on the Umrah pilgrimage at the time of the incident. Psychologist Feruza Olimova, talking to the Daryo reporter, explained why some women commit filicide.
It isn't easy to imagine the reason for this behavior
Feruza Olimova said that arguments such as the fact that the woman was depressed, helpless, and suffering at the time of the incident could not be a valid reason.
"It is difficult to imagine the reason for such behavior. Because, at that time, the woman was in a bad situation; she was depressed, desperate, or in trouble. The factors that lead the mother to such behavior are called complex. So a complex analysis is possible here," the psychologist says.
Mental illnesses
Feruza Olimova said that 40% of women who kill their children have a mental disorder and trauma.
"The first reason is, of course, mental illness, including postpartum depression. For example, the woman gave birth to three children in the current case. In this situation, the woman might have mental disorders due to sleepless nights and sick children. The same things can worsen a woman's condition against the background of other states. But this cannot be a reason to kill a child.
Mental illness is confirmed to occur in about 40% of such cases. So, 60% of mothers who do this will be healthy women. What psychological and emotional disorders occur in healthy mothers that make them commit this? This factor must be thoughtfully diagnosed in forensic psychological examination processes.
Therefore, it is difficult to point to something or a person as an apparent reason," she said.
"Don't let my child suffer after me."
According to the psychologist, the second reason is altruism, as the mother does not want her child to suffer after her.
"The second common reason lies in her thought which sounds like 'Who will have my child after me?.' This is called altruistic reason in science. The woman will find a solution on her own so that my child does not suffer after me," Feruza Olimova said.
Desire for revenge
According to the psychologist, the third factor that leads to filicide is the desire for revenge.
"Another reason is the woman's desire for revenge. She can take revenge on her husband, saying you are to blame for everything that happened. In this, he sees the child not as a child but as an object of revenge".
Social factors can destroy the maternal instinct
Feruza Olimova added that all of the above factors must have a psychological explanation because not all women reach the point of filicide in such cases.
"All this should always be carefully checked and analyzed by a psychologist. However, not all women reach this point, even if there are such factors. Even in tough situations, the maternal instinct works, which means thinking about the child's safety. This instinct is innate, genetically given, but sometimes such disorders are observed due to social factors. "That's why a mother beats her child, bruises the child, and doesn't care for her child when the child is sick," the psychologist emphasizes.
