For several days now, Tashkent consumers have been able to purchase ultra-early potatoes of the current year’s harvest from film greenhouses.
However, this novelty of the season became available about a month later this year and at an average price 1.5 times higher than last year due to the abnormal cold in January, EastFruit reports.
Reportedly, on March 25 this year, the Makro supermarket chain launched sales of ultra-early potatoes at a retail price of UZS 33,990 ($3.0) per kilogram in its stores in Uzbekistan's capital.
Last year, this season’s novelty appeared in Tashkent's grocery stores much earlier and at a price much lower than this season. Sales of ultra-early potatoes in the same supermarket chain in 2022 started on February 21 for UZS 22,990 ($2.1) per kilogram, and the prices dropped to UZS 19,990 ($1.8) per kilogram over two days.
As of February 26, 2022, retail prices for early potatoes in supermarkets in the capital of Uzbekistan ranged from UZS 15,990 to 19,990 (from $1.5 to $1.8) per kilogram.
In other words, the season’s novelty became available in retail sales this year a little more than a month later and at an average price of 1.5 times more than in 2022. The reason is the abnormal cold observed in Uzbekistan on January 10-16, 2023.
