The Chairman of the Delegation of the European Parliament for Relations with Central Asian Countries and Mongolia, Fulvio Martusciello, in a special briefing, noted that interparliamentary cooperation between Uzbekistan and the EU saw steady development in recent years. In July last year, the EU and Uzbekistan inked an Agreement on Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation, Dunyo reports.
The event discussed Uzbekistan-European cooperation's current status and prospects, scheduled joint activities this year, and the Central Asian country's constitutional reform. Reportedly, the EU attendees commended Uzbekistan's regional policy and cooperation with Afghanistan.
The parties stressed that the national referendum scheduled on April 30 this year is of great interest to the EU as it expects positive changes from this process.
Head of the Mission of the Republic of Uzbekistan to the European Union, Dilyor Khakimov, informed the MEPs about preparations for a referendum and ongoing reforms. In particular, comprehensive measures are being implemented based on the new approach to implementing the Constitutional Reform.
Reportedly, work continues to update the Constitution, which will strengthen guarantees of human rights and freedoms, ensure the people's well-being, and serve the country's development as a sovereign, democratic, legal, social, and secular State with a republican form of government.
