Turkmenistan attaches significant importance to deepening relations with Uzbekistan, based on the time-tested strong bonds of good neighborliness, said Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, head of Turkmenistan's highest representative body, Khalk Maslakhaty (People's Council).
"Turkmenistan" TV on Friday reported that he met with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on the sidelines of a meeting of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) Council of Heads of State in Ankara, Türkiye.
The sides stated that in recent years successful interaction between the two countries has reached a new level thanks to the "strong will of the political leadership".
It was noted that Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan have similar approaches to topical issues of global and regional politics.
According to the press service of the President of Uzbekistan, important attention during the meeting was paid to the beginning of practical work on the creation of the Shavat-Dashoguz border trade zone.
The sides also discussed the promotion of important cooperation projects in energy, engineering, transport and logistics, and agriculture.
Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, which share a 1,650 km long border, have increased their bilateral trade volume more than fivefold over the last few years, reaching nearly $1bn.
The two countries have recently agreed to share the region's largest (by volume) river, the Amu Darya. In addition, Uzbekistan buys energy resources directly from Turkmenistan, while Turkmenistan counts on assistance in developing the local car market.
