Russian leader Vladimir Putin is ready to continue the war in Ukraine for a long time, possibly even years, CNN reports.
According to Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines, the war in Ukraine "has become a hotbed of unprecedented destruction, in which no side has absolute military superiority." However, the official said Russian President Vladimir Putin "will probably continue the war".
"We do not foresee the Russian military recovering enough this year to make major territorial gains, but Putin most likely calculates the time works in his favor, and that prolonging the war including with potential pauses in the fighting may be his best remaining pathway to eventually securing Russia's strategic interests in Ukraine, even if it takes years,” Haines said.
Head of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, has previously said that the outcome Ukrainian war is unknown, but there are no signs that Putin has changed his ambitions.
"He doesn't want peace. He is planning a new war," the NATO leader said.
Before that, Stoltenberg had confirmed Ukraine's perspective in NATO. At the same time, he said that Ukraine's victory in the war is the only way to integrate the country and fully join the Euro-Atlantic community.
