The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reports that a conference on «Cooperation on food security in the context of climate change» will open on Thursday in Ashgabat.
Delegations from Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkey, and five Central Asian countries will participate in the event.
The FAO estimates that there is a need to produce about 50% more food by 2050 in order to feed the increasing world population.
The meeting will present FAO’s work on building smallholder resiliency to climate-related shock events.
Among the most pressing challenges is that of the desertification trends, which threaten the food security of a number of countries, and entail increased migration flows and humanitarian crises.
«For the Central Asia countries, the link with ecosystems is critical, especially with issues related to land and water, including glaciers», FAO said.
According to the United Nations, the number of undernourished people in the world continued to rise in 2021, when between 702 and 828mn people faced hunger.
It should be noted that Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, together with Iran and Afghanistan, use water from four transboundary rivers: the Amu Darya, Tejen, Atrek, and Murghab for crop irrigation.
