Murat Bektanov, former Minister of Defense of Kazakhstan, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison, Daryo.uz correspondent reports referring to Baigenews.kz
"Bektanov was convicted by the military court of the Criminal Code of Kazakhstan and sentenced to imprisonment for 12 years in the maximum-security prison,” the court verdict reads.
The court could not provide more detailed information, citing the fact that the case is considered "classified".
The investigation against the ex-head of the Ministry of Defense began on February 19, 2022. Previously, the incumbent president criticized him for uncertainty and indecency during January events. In January of this year, Prosecutor General Berik Asylov said that Bektanov had given clearly illegal orders and left military strategic sites without protection. Furthermore, he is accused of abuse of power during a combat situation.
