The cost of living for guest workers from abroad (expatriates) in Ashgabat is very high compared to other places in the world, US-based Xpatulator.com reports.
According to the portal, the overall Cost of Living Index (COLI) for all 13 basket groups in the Turkmen capital as of January 2023 is 94.54 (New York =100).
Ashgabat is 101% more expensive than Houston, TX, for groceries, -30.9% cheaper for household costs than Kuala Lumpur, and -34% cheaper for transport costs than Dubai.
For Turkmenistan, food is 76.5% more expensive than in the USA for groceries, -67.3% cheaper household costs than in the UK, and -20.1% more affordable transport costs than in India.
Inflation in Turkmenistan as of December 2022 was -17.5%, the platform says.
'We have collected prices for the same items, worldwide, based on Expat spending norms, in or closest to the location, and converted them to $USD to compare the cost of 13 different baskets in 780 global locations', the information reads.
