Children's Ombudsman Aliya Yunusova said that the tragic death of a 12-year-old girl in the Yangihayot district of Tashkent deeply saddened everyone. Discussions on the Internet, public anger and, of course, the death of a young girl show that the safety of children is not fully ensured in Uzbekistan.
“In that gruesome incident, the girl was abused by a stranger. Among the appeals, I receive, there are also children aged 4-9, and 10-14 who are regularly sexually abused by family members, grandmother, stepbrother or stepfather. Of course, this is a grave situation. It is very painful to read those heartbreaking pleas. When the office receives such kind of distressing signals, the appeals are sent promptly to the Prosecutor General's Office.
“It is noted that this situation shows that the safety of children is not fully ensured in Uzbekistan. In particular, hotlines should be launched so that children can call personally in cases of violence,” Aliya Yunusova proposed.
