Today, on October 25, Kazakhstan is celebrating Republic Day for the first time in 13 years. The holiday was canceled in 2009, but this year, at the initiative of President Kasim-Jomart Tokayev, it was restored to the status of a national holiday, Asia Plus reports.

Festive and entertainment events are under way in Astana and other large cities, and in the evening, a festive musketeer will be held in the capital. In the morning, a flag-raising ceremony was held near the head of state's residence.
In July 2022, at the meeting of the National Congress, Tokayev said that it was time to make a number of changes to the list of national holidays.
"I propose to return the status of a national holiday to Republic Day. I would like to remind you that on October 25, 1990, the declaration of the state sovereignty of Kazakhstan was adopted. This was the first step towards the independence of our country. The first president Nursultan Nazarbayev played a very important role in the adoption of this document," the Kazakh leader said at the time.
In his opinion, Republic Day should become a symbol of the country's historic step towards statehood.
In the declaration of the sovereignty of the Kazakh SSR, the integrity, indivisibility and inviolability of the territory of the republic, the development of the cultures and languages of the peoples, and the strengthening of the national identity were determined. Until 2009, the day of signing this document was a public holiday.
