The advanced concepts and peace policy of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) have helped to expand the ranks of its members, and more countries are expected to join the organization in the future, said a Chinese expert on international relations.
The SCO was established in Shanghai in 2001 by China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. India and Pakistan joined the organization as full members in 2017.
In 2021, the total size of the economies of the SCO member states will be about 23.3 trillion US dollars, equal to about a quarter of the world's gross domestic product. According to experts, cooperation in various fields within the framework of the SCO created an environment of stable development for all parties and brought effective results in the economic and cultural fields as well.
"The SCO is the first international organization with a clear definition of terrorism and extremism. The organization has conducted research into the concept and action of eliminating terrorism. It has built a big family where every member knows each other. This is a tremendous achievement," said Li Siguo, director of Eurasian Studies at the China Institute of International Studies.
In 2021, the volume of trade between China and other SCO member states increased by 40% compared to the same period of the previous year amounting to 343.1 billion US dollars. China, as a founding member, is committed to supporting the development of the SCO, enriching the modern meaning of the "Shanghai spirit" with advanced ideas and concrete actions.
