September 13. “Proceedings are underway to recover 686 million US dollars illegally obtained by the criminal group headed by Gulnara Karimova and legalized in Switzerland,” Deputy Minister of Justice Muzraf Ikramov informs, at a briefing in Tashkent, "Daryo" correspondent reports.
"As a result of the cooperation of the Uzbek and Swiss law enforcement agencies, the illegitimate assets of the criminal organization led by Gulnara Karimova were brought to the Swiss courts. The total amount to be recovered is approximately USD 686 million.
So far, the Swiss court ordered to sequestrate around 336 million US dollars and return 131 million dollars to Uzbekistan. The rest of the large sum, 205 million dollars, will be also decided soon. Currently, the issue of confiscation of 307 million US dollars is being considered in the Swiss courts," the deputy minister said.
It is reported that 131 million dollars will be returned to Uzbekistan in 10 weeks.
Uzbekistan and Switzerland signed a final agreement on Gulnara Karimova's criminal assets stipulating the return to Uzbekistan of 131 million dollars illegally obtained and legalized in Switzerland. According to the document, the returned funds will be directed to the social sphere, in particular, to education and healthcare.
On February, 10 million dollars from France were returned to Uzbekistan as a result of the work carried out by Gulnara Karimova on the return of her criminally acquired property to the country.
