Nukus rioters remorse: "I joined the mob having no clue about it", "I joined the crowd out of curiosity, Now I deeply regret."

Nukus rioters remorse: "I joined the mob having no clue about it", "I joined the crowd out of curiosity, Now I deeply regret."

In the city of Nukus, Karakalpakstan, on July 1, 2022, at approximately 3:00 p.m., the peaceful rally soon turned into an unruly demonstration near the central market. Thousands of people flooded the streets of the city. Meanwhile, the law enforcement officers tried to prevent any violence and disorder.

Daryo reporter managed to speak to some of the detainees who as they say unknowingly joined the illegal rally and now regret what they had done.

    Sh.J. is one of them.

"I am originally from Kegeili. I came to Nukus that day to start a job in a carpet shop. I unknowingly joined the illegal demonstration in front of the farmer's market. When I went there on the "minibus" to return home, I saw people gathering. They were pulling each other and shouting "go ahead". I didn’t know anyone in the crowd. When I found out that it was an illegal demonstration, I started to leave the crowd. They arrested me in front of the Tashkent hotel. I regret and say to my brothers and sisters – don’t get involved in such things. No one needs a conflict between two nations. We are a nation of two births.

"I went astray and fell into the abyss"

"After reading the news spread on social networks, I was interested in what will happen after the rumors that there will be a rally, and I joined. I was returning from work that day. There are protesters in front of Nukus International Airport. I joined them. As time passed, the number of people increased. First two people, then four, then six, and so on. I didn't think it would reach this level. Then I found out that it was an illegal demonstration. You should not get involved in such things. I saw my children and my family. I miss them. We should not be divided into Uzbeks and Karakalpaks, but live together.

The goal of the evil forces is to come from outside and create discord within the people. They do not have the goal of uniting the people. Keeping peace is the duty of every citizen. We got lost once. Our foreheads hit the stone. I regret what I did. I apologize to our people, our relatives, and our president," said A.K.

"I regret what I did, I apologize to our people"

"I was born in Kegeili district. I currently live in Nukus. On July 2, I went to my sister's house to get money. I unknowingly joined the demonstration in front of the teahouse. I was arrested near Nukus International Airport. In fact, I joined the protesters without knowing it. After walking with them for two hours, I parted from them. But they were still caught near the airport. I regret what I did. I apologize to our people. I promise not to go down this path from now on," says R.T

"Now we are ashamed of ourselves, we apologize to our people and our president"

"I was born in Chimboy district. I currently live in Nukus. I returned from work and went to the market. I saw people shouting while leaving the market. I put the bike aside and went to them to find out what happened. I joined the crowd with the influence of the masses. At that time, those who had gathered were shouting "Release Davlet (Dauletmurat Tajimuratov)". I also joined without them knowing. Now we are ashamed of ourselves, we regret it.

I was taken from my place of work on July 2. I recorded the events of the previous day on my phone. We regret it now. We apologize to our people and our president. I understood that what we did was wrong," said A.H.

On July 2, Shavkat Mirziyoyev went to Nukus and held a meeting with deputies of Dzhokhargi Kenges, veterans and activists of Karakalpakstan. At the meeting, the president said that it is necessary to leave the articles of the Constitution related to Karakalpakstan unchanged in the current version. On July 3, Shavkat Mirziyoyev went to Nukus again and conducted a video selection. After the address of the head of state, it was reported that the situation has stabilized and life is returning to normal. The Prosecutor General's Office accused the blogger who called the people to a rally and others of violation of the Constitutional system saying "I ask you to lead me to Karakalpak and follow my footsteps".
