A landmark agreement was signed on June 6 in Beijing for the construction of the "China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan" railway, a strategic project set to enhance economic and transport connectivity across the region, Uzbekistan's presidential press service reports.
The signing ceremony was marked by video messages from President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan, President Xi Jinping of China, and President Sadyr Japarov of Kyrgyzstan.
Presidential Messages
President Mirziyoyev addressed the participants via video, highlighting the significance of the project. He emphasized,
"The beginning of the implementation of this important infrastructure project is a historical event aimed at strengthening the economic and transport connectivity in our vast region."
He further stated,
"This railway will become the shortest land route connecting China with our region. In the future, this road will allow our countries to enter the wide markets of South Asia and the Middle East through the promising Trans-Afghan corridor."
Economic and Strategic Implications
The construction of the "China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan" railway is expected to have far-reaching economic impacts. According to President Mirziyoyev, the economic effect resulting from the implementation of the project will be manifested in the creation of new enterprises and tens of thousands of jobs, the doubling of the volume of mutual trade, the expansion of industrial cooperation, the growth of investment attractiveness and, most importantly, the increase in the standard of living of the population.
Project Route and Infrastructure Development
As per to the agreement, the railway will follow the route Kashgar-Torugart-Makmal-Jalalabad-Andijan. This route is strategically chosen to maximize connectivity and economic benefits. The project will also involve the development of modern transit and logistics infrastructure, including warehouses and terminals, to support the increased flow of goods.
in May, Kyrgyzstan's President, Sadyr Japarov, has revealed intentions to initiate the construction of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway in October 2024.
