Uzbekistan's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) is entering its final stage, according to President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. During a meeting discussing the country’s economic development and plans for 2025, Mirziyoyev highlighted the progress made in the accession process, noting that agreements had been reached with major countries such as the United States and China. The completion of this process is expected to open new trade opportunities for Uzbekistan on the global stage.
In addition to the WTO accession, the country has also focused on improving its border infrastructure. This year, several key border posts were reopened, including the "Khanabad", "Mingtepa", and "Korasuv" posts in Andijan region, which had been closed for 13 years, as well as the "Uchkurgan" checkpoint, which had not been operational for 8 years. These improvements have reduced travel distances for residents and businesses by 100 kilometers, facilitating smoother cross-border exchanges.
Over the past 11 months, the number of vehicles crossing Uzbekistan’s borders has increased significantly, with an additional 400,000 vehicles crossing, bringing the total to over 3mn cars.
Looking ahead to 2025, the government plans to further enhance border infrastructure. Additional corridors will be built at the "Gishtkuprik", "Navoi", "Davut-ota", "Shavot", and "Gulbahor" border posts. These improvements are expected to increase the throughput capacity of these checkpoints by five times, further supporting trade and travel across Uzbekistan’s borders.
Earlier Daryo reported that President Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced that 23 international hotel brands, such as Swissôtel, Sheraton, Ritz-Carlton, Novotel, Pullman, Marriott, ibis, and Mercure, are set to open in Uzbekistan.
