Uzbekistan has officially ratified an agreement with China on the mutual protection of classified information, with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev signing the law to finalize the ratification, highlighting a step toward strengthening bilateral security ties and deepening the strategic partnership between Tashkent and Beijing.
The agreement, signed in Xi’an on May 18, 2023, during President Mirziyoyev's visit to China, consists of 19 articles. It designates Uzbekistan’s State Security Service as the authorized body responsible for its implementation.
According to Article 15, the agreement is open-ended, remaining in force indefinitely and becoming effective once both nations exchange notifications confirming the completion of internal procedures.
This accord reflects Uzbekistan’s commitment to enhancing international cooperation on sensitive information security. The country has entered into similar agreements with other nations, including Kazakhstan, Russia, the United States, and Germany.
The ratification process for the agreement progressed through Uzbekistan’s legislative bodies, with the Legislative Chamber adopting it on July 30, 2024, and the Senate approving it on September 30, 2024.
Earlier, Uzbekistan and China have reiterated their dedication to strengthening bilateral ties, with a focus on streamlining visa processes, enhancing consular cooperation, and advancing major infrastructure projects.
Uzbekistan recently completed bilateral negotiations with China for its World Trade Organization (WTO) membership, marking it as the 22nd country to do so.
