The European Union (EU) has allocated €5mn to support medical training programs across EMERGENCY’s healthcare facilities in Afghanistan. This three-year initiative aims to enhance access to high-quality healthcare by equipping local medical professionals, including residents, nurses, and midwives, with specialized skills.

Afghanistan faces ongoing humanitarian and economic challenges, with nearly two-thirds of its population experiencing multidimensional poverty. The departure of essential health workers after August 2021, combined with restrictions on women's education, has exacerbated the strain on the country's healthcare system. As a result, public health services struggle to meet growing demands, leaving millions with limited access to medical care.
The EU’s funding will bolster EMERGENCY’s efforts to train hundreds of Afghan healthcare workers at its free medical facilities in Kabul, Helmand (Lashkar-Gah), and Panjshir (Anabah). The initiative aligns with the EU’s broader humanitarian support strategy, aiming to bridge the gap between emergency relief and sustainable development.
“This is more than an investment in healthcare—it’s an investment in Afghanistan’s future. By equipping healthcare professionals with vital skills and promoting women's participation in the sector, we aim to foster a stronger and more equitable healthcare system,” EU Chargée d’Affaires Veronika Boskovic Pohar voiced.
EMERGENCY’s Country Director, Dejan Panic, emphasized the goal of building a resilient healthcare system that ensures quality care for all Afghans in the long run.
Over the next three years, the program will train 75 medical residents—15 of whom are Afghan women—in specialties such as surgery, anesthesia, obstetrics and gynecology, and pediatrics. Additionally, 420 nurses, including 140 women, and 65 midwives will undergo specialized courses and continuous professional development training.
By strengthening Afghanistan’s healthcare workforce, the EU-EMERGENCY partnership aims to build a more sustainable and inclusive medical system, ensuring that quality healthcare remains accessible to those in need.
