Acting Minister of Economy Alhaj Qari Din Mohammad Hanif met with Veronika Boskovic Pohar, acting head of the European Union’s delegation in Afghanistan, to discuss continued humanitarian and development aid for Afghanistan, the Taliban-run Ministry of Economy announced on November 7. During the meeting, Pohar pledged $100mn to support Afghanistan's humanitarian and agricultural needs, as well as initiatives to boost small-scale economic activities.
The EU's commitment includes support for critical agricultural projects aimed at bolstering food security and improving local livelihoods. The funding will also extend to humanitarian assistance, providing essential resources to Afghan communities struggling with economic hardships. Pohar highlighted the EU’s intention to organize a conference focused on promoting small businesses and entrepreneurship, a step aimed at fostering economic resilience.
In his remarks, Acting Minister Hanif welcomed the EU’s ongoing assistance and highlighted the urgent need to prioritize employment and production sectors as a foundation for long-term economic stability.
"The essential solution to poverty lies in expanding employment opportunities and focusing on productive sectors," he stated, adding that development aid targeting private sector growth could help alleviate poverty and improve family incomes.
The meeting comes at a time when the Taliban government is enforcing a new decree prohibiting non-mahram men and women from meeting privately or holding joint gatherings. While some officials have reportedly disregarded this rule, the decree has been strictly enforced among citizens across various provinces. The EU representative’s meeting with the Taliban official is seen as a significant step in continuing diplomatic and developmental engagement amid challenging regulatory constraints.
The European Union has been one of Afghanistan’s largest aid contributors over the past three years, delivering critical support during economic and humanitarian crises.
