The European Union has made a contribution to the Tashkent Botanical Garden, a beloved landmark and one of the largest and oldest natural parks in the region. Located in the heart of Tashkent, the Botanical Garden offers a unique space for both relaxation and scientific research, showcasing the flora of five continents – Central Asia, East Asia, the Far East, Europe, and North America – with over 4,500 species of trees, flowers, and plants.
The EU's support has brought modern machinery to enhance maintenance efficiency and new benches to create a more comfortable and welcoming environment for visitors. These upgrades have made it easier to maintain the garden, especially during the winter months when upkeep is critical. The EU encourages residents and visitors of Tashkent to explore this extraordinary space not only for its beauty but also to learn about the ongoing efforts to protect nature and biodiversity.
In an era where environmental degradation and climate change present growing challenges, spaces like the Tashkent Botanical Garden are vital in raising awareness and promoting sustainable practices. The garden plays an essential role in educating the public about the importance of conservation and the protection of the planet.
As part of the Europe Day celebrations in May 2024, marking 30 years of partnership between the European Union and Uzbekistan, the Tashkent Botanical Garden hosted the European Union Festival. This vibrant event featured over 50 EU-funded projects implemented in Uzbekistan and the Central Asian region in 2023, and more than 70 in 2024.
The festival drew about 10,000 attendees and included an EU exhibition, the Team Europe initiative, a concert, educational games, and family-friendly activities, underscoring the EU’s commitment to cultural exchange and development cooperation.
Looking ahead, the EU is excited to continue its collaboration with the Tashkent Botanical Garden, planning public campaigns that will further strengthen the bond between Europe and Uzbekistan, while advancing shared goals of environmental preservation and cultural enrichment.
