The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Kyrgyzstan, in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) and the Secretariat of the Security Council of the Kyrgyz Republic, hosted a national workshop focused on improving the control of small arms and light weapons (SALW).
The workshop brought together representatives from government agencies, civil society, the expert community, and international experts in arms control. Participants explored best practices in SALW control, drawing from experiences in various countries, including the Balkans. The seminar emphasized the development of National Action Plans (NAPs) for effective SALW management.
Marat Imankulov, Secretary of the Security Council of the Kyrgyz Republic, highlighted the workshop's goal of tackling issues related to small arms and light weapons. He stressed the importance of developing a draft National Action Plan swiftly, incorporating advanced arms control mechanisms to enhance citizen and societal security, as well as national and regional stability. Imankulov expressed optimism that, with international support, the participants will achieve their objectives.
Monica Rijal, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative, described the workshop as a crucial step in strengthening SALW control in Kyrgyzstan.
“Effective SALW control is essential for ensuring public safety, preventing violence, and supporting sustainable development,” she stated.
The workshop also marked the initiation of the practical development of a National Action Plan on SALW in Kyrgyzstan, aligning with international standards and best practices. Under the coordination of the Secretariat of the Security Council, an interagency working group will convene to refine the action plan.
This initiative is part of the new SALIENT project, "Strengthening Control Over Small Arms and Light Weapons in the Kyrgyz Republic," which emphasizes inclusivity. The project aims to engage all sectors of society, including women and community leaders, acknowledging their crucial role in mitigating armed violence.
