President Joe Biden issued a statement announcing his decision not to seek re-election, focusing instead on completing his presidential duties for the remainder of his term.
In his address, Biden highlighted the progress made under his administration over the past three and a half years, emphasizing America's current standing as the world's leading economy.
Biden outlined investments in rebuilding the nation, reducing prescription drug costs for seniors, and expanding affordable health care to a record number of Americans. He also noted the provision of care to a million veterans exposed to toxic substances, the enactment of the first gun safety law in three decades, the appointment of the first African American woman to the Supreme Court, and the passage of significant climate legislation.
"America has never been better positioned to lead than we are today," Biden stated, attributing these accomplishments to the cooperation of the American people.
He reflected on the nation's recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, emphasizing the protection and preservation of democracy and the revitalization of global alliances.
Expressing his gratitude, Biden acknowledged the efforts of his administration and the support of Vice President Kamala Harris.
"It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your president," he said.
Despite his initial intention to seek re-election, Biden revealed that stepping down is in the best interest of his party and the country.
Biden concluded his statement by expressing appreciation to all who supported his re-election efforts and to the American people for their trust and faith.
"I believe today what I always have: that there is nothing America can't do when we do it together. We just have to remember we are the United States of America."
The president announced plans to speak in more detail about his decision later in the week.
