The Minister of Science and Higher Education Sayasat Nurbek announced progress in the development of a domestic anti-cancer drug, at the press conference held by the Kazakh government on July 16. The first stage of clinical trials has been successfully completed, with promising results.
"Fifteen cancer patients have undergone treatment at the Institute of Radiology and Oncology in Almaty. The results are very encouraging," stated Nurbek. "The Prime Minister has taken this issue under his personal control. We have created a special working group. The second stage of testing began in July and will involve about 3,000 people."
Nurbek further mentioned that over 5,000 cancer patients have signed up for the trials. The government has allocated approximately KZT 2bn ($4.2mn) for the second stage, expected to arrive in August. This stage is set to be completed by the end of the year, with data processing to follow.
"The money for the second stage, approximately KZT 2bn, has been allocated and will arrive in August. By the end of the year, the second stage will be completed, and we will process all the data. We have high expectations of launching this medicine for registration next year," Nurbek voiced.
The first stage of testing showed promising results, particularly for a very aggressive form of cancer – stage four colon cancer, where the tumor shrank by 30%.
"We are currently processing the data and now need to test it on all types of cancer," Nurbek said.
The second stage of testing will take place in Almaty, Astana, and Pavlodar. This effort is part of the project "Development of a domestic anti-cancer drug D-VK ("Made in Kazakhstan")", which is an active development of a new anti-cancer drug with no global analogues. The project aims to provide a breakthrough in cancer treatment with a domestically produced solution.
